SIDA Hotline: 1-800-233-7432
The Community Development Initiative (CDI) seeks to enhance the capacity in communities of color throughout New York State to prevent HIV/STI infection through community mobilization, education, awareness, policy development, resource enhancement and dissemination of relevant information.
In order to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic throughout Fulton and Montgomery counties, the Community Development Initiative (CDI) at Centro Cívico of Amsterdam, Inc., works in identifying community needs and developing a response by organizing the community into coalitions. CDI also monitors policy issues that directly impact or relate to HIV infected/affected communities of color in NYS in order to advocate for enhancement of resources and policy change. In addition, CDI has developed a media plan to disseminate relevant HIV/AIDS related information to policy makers, community leaders and the community at large.
CDI maintains an AIDS Leadership Coalition known as the Red Ribbon Partnership of Fulton/Montgomery counties (RRP). This coalition combines the expertise of service providers with the insight and the experience of people living with HIV/AIDS.
CDI staff closely monitors any policy changes at the national, regional and local level that may affect people living with HIV/AIDS. Then, it turns it to both the RRP and the AEA to analyze the potential impact in our communities, and prepares an agenda to either advocate for changes or to adjust to the possible changes.
The closest collaboration CDI maintains is with the statewide Spanish AIDs Hotline (SIDA). These two programs coordinate most of their activities in an effort to reduce cost while providing uninterrupted services.
This program is funded by the New York State Department of Health’s AIDS Institute. http://www.health.state.ny.us/diseases/aids/about/index.htm
